Jacob Oboth-Oboth: NRM Delegates Hand West Budama Central County MP Strong Mandate as Speaker with 441 Votes

Delegates attending the National Resistance Movement (NRM) National Delegates Conference have overwhelmingly endorsed West Budama Central County Member of Parliament, Jacob Oboth-Oboth, as Speaker of the conference, handing him a strong mandate to preside over the party’s highest decision-making gathering.
The State Minister for Defence and Veterans Affairs secured 441 votes in an election conducted at Kololo Ceremonial Grounds on Monday, comfortably defeating his rivals in a contest that attracted participation from hundreds of delegates drawn from across Uganda.
Of the 519 ballots cast, only three were spoiled, while no delegate abstained, highlighting the significance delegates attached to the vote and the level of engagement in the conference proceedings.
Oboth’s election comes as the ruling party convenes to deliberate on key organizational and political matters, including preparations for future elections, policy direction, and internal governance issues. The National Delegates Conference plays a central role in shaping the NRM’s agenda and making decisions that influence the party’s operations nationwide.
Political observers at the conference viewed the outcome as a sign of broad confidence in Oboth’s ability to manage deliberations and maintain order during what is expected to be a busy agenda. As Speaker, he will be responsible for guiding debates, ensuring adherence to conference rules and overseeing the adoption of resolutions by delegates.
The conference has attracted senior party leaders, government officials, Members of Parliament, district chairpersons and representatives of various NRM structures, making it one of the most significant events on the party calendar.
Oboth’s decisive victory places him at the centre of discussions that could shape the party’s direction ahead of upcoming political contests and policy debates.
