In a devastating incident on Monday, May 5, 2025, a YY Coaches passenger bus traveling from Kampala to Mbale overturned and caught fire in Makindu Village, Buikwe District, resulting in multiple fatalities and injuries.
According to eyewitnesses, the accident occurred around 5:00 PM along the Kisoga–Nyenga Road. The driver of the Scania bus, registration number UAV 701C, reportedly lost control while attempting to avoid a boda-boda rider, causing the vehicle to overturn multiple times before bursting into flames.
Mr. Paul Kakande, who was at the scene, recounted, “The bus overturned after the driver tried to avoid hitting a boda-boda rider who was crossing the road. Many accidents are happening here, and the road is narrow with limited humps towards schools and trading centers. The road also has sharp corners that most new motorists do not know.”
Emergency services, including the police fire brigade, responded promptly to the scene. However, the intensity of the fire hampered rescue efforts. Several passengers were trapped inside the burning wreckage, with only a few managing to escape through broken windows.
The injured were rushed to nearby health facilities, including Kawolo Hospital and St. Francis Lwanga Hospital, for emergency treatment. The exact number of casualties remains unconfirmed as authorities continue recovery and identification efforts.
Ms. Hellen Butoto, Ssezibwa Police Spokesperson, confirmed the incident, stating, “It is true that a bus belonging to YY bus company, travelling from Kampala to Mbale, lost control, overturned with passengers, and caught fire, resulting in an unknown number of passenger fatalities and several injuries.”
The Directorate of Traffic and Road Safety has initiated an investigation to determine the exact cause of the accident. Preliminary reports suggest that the driver’s attempt to avoid a sudden obstacle led to the loss of control.
YY Coaches and Courier Services issued a statement expressing deep regret over the incident: “We are working closely with the relevant authorities and will continue to offer support to the victims and their families during this difficult time.”
This tragic event underscores ongoing concerns about road safety in Uganda. In 2024, the country recorded 25,107 road crashes, resulting in 5,154 fatalities.
As investigations continue, authorities urge motorists to exercise caution, especially on roads known for sharp bends and limited safety features.
