The MP for Budadiri West Hon Nandala Mafabi has come out to question the importance of economists in Uganda. Mafabi says Uganda has neither planners nor economists and a country without these is bound to collapse.
“In this country, if we don’t plan for ourselves, we are finished. We don’t have planners or economists. If we do, I think they studied economics in a backward direction,” Hon Mafabi said.
He adds that the president has to know what the citizens are going through. This is because if people are hungry, it poses a security threat to the country.
The MP also says that the government should protect people against exorbitant fees for certain commodities since many companies enjoy tax holidays in the country.
“In this country, if we don’t plan for ourselves, we are finished. We don’t have planners or economists. If we do, I think they studied economics in a backward direction.
We have many companies enjoying exemption. Why can’t the government say, since sugar is manufactured here, it can’t go beyond a specific price?”
According to Nandala, one can be a slave in their own country because of the policies in place. Good policies are meant to benefit everyone im the country according to the MP.
It should be recalled that basic price commodities skyrocketed beyond a lay man’s ability and most have decided to abstain from using them.
