The government has moved to reassure international visitors, investors, and tourism stakeholders that Uganda remains a safe destination for travel despite recent concerns arising from Ebola cases linked to the neighbouring Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).
The assurance comes amid heightened regional attention following reports of imported Ebola cases that prompted health authorities to strengthen surveillance and response measures across the country. Ugandan officials insist that the situation remains under control and that the country continues to welcome tourists and business travellers.
According to tourism and health authorities, the cases recorded in Uganda were imported from the DRC and do not represent widespread community transmission within the country. Officials say robust screening systems, contact tracing mechanisms, and emergency response teams have been activated to contain any potential risks and protect public health.
The reassurance is particularly important for Uganda’s tourism sector, one of the country’s key foreign exchange earners. The sector has continued to recover strongly in recent years, attracting visitors to renowned attractions such as mountain gorilla trekking, wildlife safaris, cultural heritage sites, and adventure tourism destinations.
Government officials have emphasized that tourism activities across the country remain operational and that visitors can continue to enjoy Uganda’s attractions while observing the recommended health guidelines. The Uganda Tourism Board has maintained that there is no reason for travellers to cancel or postpone planned visits based on the current situation.
The latest statement comes at a time when Uganda is positioning itself as a leading tourism destination in East Africa, with increased investments in tourism infrastructure, marketing campaigns, and international partnerships aimed at boosting visitor numbers.
Health authorities have nevertheless urged the public and travellers to remain vigilant as the government continues to monitor developments in the region. Border surveillance has been intensified, particularly along routes connecting Uganda and the DRC, while emergency preparedness measures remain in place.
Tourism industry players have welcomed the government’s reassurance, noting that clear communication is critical in maintaining confidence among international travellers and tour operators.
The government maintains that Uganda’s tourism destinations, hospitality facilities, and transport networks remain safe and accessible, and that ongoing public health interventions are designed to ensure the safety of both residents and visitors.
