President Museveni Appoints AIGP Abbas Byakagaba as new Police IGP

Abbas Byakagaba IGP. President Kaguta Museveni has today in a surprise move named Assistant Inspector General of Police (AIGP) Abbas Byakagaba the new Inspector General of Uganda Police, taking effect immediately.

Additionally, Maj Gen Geoffrey Katsigazi will be replaced by AIGP James Ochaya to deputize Byakagaba. Following the expiration of Martins Okoth Ochola’s contract in March 2024, this appointee replaces him as Inspector General of Police.

As the former commander of counterterrorism and director of human resources, Byakagaba brings a wide variety of experience to the position. It is believed that his nomination has been made strategically to strengthen the nation’s security forces.

The move has shocked the police hierarchy, with many applauding the selection of an experienced officer to the top position. Abbas Byakagaba IGP
