Jinja is set to be the entertainment capital of the region this weekend with the Nyege Nyege festival opening its doors.
The annual festival that attracts thousands of fun lovers from around the region and the world is back on the social calendar with a bang. The festival, which is never without controversy, is a chance for musicians, artists, epicureans and those desirous for a carnival of fun to shake off the city and dive deep into Jinja’s greenery.
Despite warnings from the US and UK government to be wary of terror threats, this has not dampened enthusiasm for the festival which attracts people from all kinds of background where social classes are discarded.
Nyege Nyege has slowly been adopted by the Ugandan government who on previous occasions had complained that it corrupted the morals of younger attendees. However, it has attracted defenders like East African minister Rebecca Kadaga who argues that it has been an economic boon for Busoga region.
The festival comes at a time when Busoga Kingdom is also preparing for the most glamorous wedding of its monarch Kyabazinga Gabula Nadiope. Uganda and the region will have its dancing feet in the east of the country for two weekends straight.
