World Athletics Champions Jacob Kiplimo Survives Nasty Accident

Ugandan long distance runner and world cross country champion, Jacob Kiplimo has today survived a deadly accident. Kiplimo en route to his home district of Kapchorwa got an accident in Kween district, eastern Uganda.

While driving along the Kamunerket-Mengya road, his vehicle, a grey double cabin skidded off the road. Kiplimo who was in the driver’s seat suffered minor injuries as well as his car getting a dent on the driver’s side

He was helped to get out of the car by the pedestrians who were nearby and then he was driven to a nearby hospital in Kapchorwa town . The runner thanked God because he didn’t suffer any career threatening physical injury.

“I am not sure how much body damage internally this could have caused to me, but I am grateful to God for shielding me. It could have been worse,” he said after surviving the accident.

These accidents which are not a new phenomenon in the area have been blamed on the poor state of the roads in the area.

“These athletes live dangerously in these areas given the dire state of roads, mostly during rainy seasons,” said resident Roger Barishaki.

The accident comes a few days after Jacob Kiplimo defended his title in the world cross country championship that took place in Belgrade in Serbia. He was the only individual gold medalist from Uganda as he beat runners from Kenya and Ethiopia.

It’s expected and hopes that the accident has no effect on the runner in the upcoming 2024 Paris Olympics that will start in July.

Besides it should also be recalled that Kenyan world recorder Kelvin Kiptum and his Rwandan coach, Gervais Hakizimana lost their lives in February to a road accident.
