Current Kilak North Constituency MP, Anthony Akol, known for his altercation with fellow MP Hon Francis Zaake Mutebi, has shifted allegiance from the Opposition to the ruling NRM. Reflecting on his choice, Akol mentioned that he has spent too long in the opposition.
During this time, his constituency has remained entrenched in poverty without significant benefits from his political affiliations. He pointed this issue to the leadership of the NRM and the Museveni government.
Rather than consistently experiencing defeat, he has now seemingly opted to align with the winning party in hopes of uplifting his region from the grip of poverty.
“When I compare my area to those governed by the NRM, the contrast is evident, which is why I decided to leave the FDC party.”
It’s important to note that the lawmaker currently serves in Parliament representing the FDC party. However, due to the ongoing challenges and discontent within the party, several members have abandoned it for other political factions or the Besigye Katonga group.
Akol gained national attention after he struck Zaake in the parliamentary chamber over a seating issue. The Mityana Municipality MP had vacated his seat briefly, allowing Akol to occupy it without realizing its significance.
When Zaake returned to reclaim it, he attempted to use force, which frustrated Akol and led him to punch the MP, leaving Zaake hospitalized.
