Equity Leaders Program Changing Lives of Uganda’s Brightest Students

For many young people across Uganda, education remains one of the few opportunities capable of transforming lives, lifting families out of poverty, and creating hope for a better future.

Yet while thousands of students possess the talent and determination to succeed, access to opportunity often remains the biggest challenge.

It is this gap that the Equity Leaders Program (ELP) continues to address by supporting academically gifted students from disadvantaged backgrounds through mentorship, leadership training, internships, and career development opportunities.

During the commissioning of Cohort 5 scholars at African Bible University, one story captured the attention of many attendees, the journey of Sebuufu Saul Bisenji, whose rise from a rural farming community in Mityana to becoming an Equity scholar reflected the realities faced by many Ugandan students.

Born and raised in Zigoti Village in Mityana District, Saul grew up in a peasant farming family where financial struggles were part of everyday life. School fees, rent, and household expenses were often difficult to meet despite the family’s efforts in agriculture.

I always tell people that I left home to change my destiny,” Saul said while speaking during the commissioning ceremony.

As the eldest brother to seven sisters, Saul said he understood early that education would not only shape his future but also create opportunities for his family.

Like many students from underserved communities, his educational journey came with constant sacrifices. At some point, he worked in school gardens and contributed agricultural produce toward tuition payments to remain in school.

Despite the hardships, Saul remained focused on his education and continued believing that determination and access to opportunity could change his circumstances.

His turning point came after hearing about another student from Mityana who had benefited from the Equity Leaders Program. Motivated by that success story, Saul intensified his academic efforts.

After scoring 20 points in the Uganda Advanced Certificate of Education (UACE), he was selected among 100 students chosen from more than 16,000 applicants nationwide to join the Equity Leaders Program.

Saul described the moment he received the call from Equity Bank Uganda as life-changing. He recalled riding through heavy rain on a boda boda to collect the required forms from the nearest bank branch.

Being selected is not simply a reward for excellence. It is a responsibility to become better and do better,” he said.

The Equity Leaders Program has increasingly become one of Uganda’s most impactful youth leadership and scholarship initiatives, focusing not only on academic excellence but also on leadership development and personal growth.

Through mentorship and exposure opportunities, scholars are encouraged to view themselves as future leaders, entrepreneurs, innovators, and professionals capable of contributing to Uganda’s development.

Education stakeholders say the program is helping restore confidence among young people from disadvantaged backgrounds by demonstrating that success is possible regardless of where one comes from.

Today, we leave this place not just as students, but as leaders,” Saul told fellow scholars.

His story mirrors the experiences of many young Ugandans whose futures are being transformed through targeted investments in education and leadership development.

For many beneficiaries, the Equity Leaders Program is not just providing financial or academic support — it is opening doors to opportunity, hope, and long-term transformation.
