The Ministry of Works and Transport in Uganda has officially launched the Automated Electronic Penalty System (AEPS), a state-of-the-art initiative aimed at enhancing road safety and promoting compliance with traffic regulations. The new camera-enabled system is now fully operational across the country, actively issuing electronic tickets to motorists who violate speed limits and red light rules.
The AEPS leverages advanced surveillance technology to monitor traffic in real-time. High-resolution cameras strategically installed at key road junctions and highways automatically detect infractions. Once a violation is recorded, the system instantly generates an electronic ticket, which is sent to the vehicle owner. This eliminates human error and corruption associated with manual traffic enforcement.
Motorists are advised to exercise caution, as violations will automatically attract penalties without warning. Common offences under the AEPS include over-speeding, running red lights, reckless driving, and failure to adhere to designated lanes. The system is part of the government’s broader efforts to reduce road accidents, which have been a major public health concern in Uganda.
Speaking about the initiative, a Ministry wrote on X that: “The automated Electronic Penalty System is now active. The camera-enabled system is actively issuing tickets to motorists across the country in an effort to enforce speed limits and red light compliance.
Caution: Violations will automatically attract penalties. Drive safe. Obey traffic rules!”
To avoid penalties, drivers are urged to obey all traffic laws, maintain reasonable speeds, and remain vigilant at intersections. The Ministry is also conducting public awareness campaigns to educate motorists about the system and its implications.
