The battle for Makindye West is heating up ahead of the 2026 general elections. Musiri David, a former Makerere University activist and ex-lover of Dr. Stella Nyanzi, has officially picked his expression of interest forms under the National Unity Platform (NUP), signaling his intent to unseat incumbent MP Allan Ssewanyana.
Ssewanyana, who has represented Makindye West for two terms, is facing the biggest political challenge of his career. His tenure has been marred by legal troubles, having spent a significant part of this parliamentary term behind bars. He and the late Muhammad Ssegirinya were jointly accused in the Masaka killings, a case that has severely dented his public image and political standing.
In the 2021 elections, Musiri bowed out of the race in support of Ssewanyana, granting him a second term. However, sources close to the NUP secretariat indicate that Musiri, now serving as head of NUP institutions, feels it is time for a new chapter.
Interestingly, insiders suggest Ssewanyana’s ties with NUP have weakened in recent months. Despite this, he is not backing down and is reportedly preparing for a comeback. He has formed a grassroots campaign team known as SOLIDA, tasked with mobilization and guarding his votes during the election period.
Meanwhile, Musiri will count on NUP’s foot soldiers, some of whom have undergone basic military training, to secure victory at the grassroots level.
Conclusion
Makindye West is set for a political showdown. With Ssewanyana fighting to retain his seat and Musiri aiming to rise through the party ranks, 2026 could redefine the constituency’s leadership.
