Pedestrian Killed in Grisly Kisoro-Kabale Highway Crash

A 40-year-old man was killed instantly on Saturday evening after being knocked down by a speeding semi-trailer along the Kisoro-Kabale Highway in Kanaba Sub-county, Kisoro District.

The deceased has been identified as Erasto Iratanga, a resident of Kibande Village in Bufumbira East Constituency.

The fatal accident occurred at around 6:30 p.m. at Chananke Trading Centre in Kibande Village, Muhindura Parish. According to eyewitnesses, Iratanga was attempting to cross the road when the semi-trailer, which was travelling towards Kisoro Town, struck him.

Witnesses said the truck was moving at high speed and ran over the victim, causing severe head injuries that resulted in his death on the spot.

Residents who spoke to Let Out News blamed the accident on reckless driving and overspeeding, calling on traffic authorities to strengthen enforcement measures along the busy Kisoro-Kabale Highway.

“This road has become dangerous because some drivers ignore speed limits, especially in trading centres where many people cross the road,” one resident said.

Following the accident, the vehicle involved was reportedly intercepted at Nyakabande Police Aid Post before being escorted to Kisoro Central Police Station (CPS) for inspection and further investigations.

Police officers from Kisoro District responded to the scene and conveyed the body of the deceased to Kisoro Hospital Mortuary for a postmortem examination.

Authorities have since launched investigations to establish the exact circumstances surrounding the crash.

The incident adds to growing concerns over road safety along major highways in the Kigezi sub-region, where residents have repeatedly called for stricter enforcement of traffic regulations and measures to protect pedestrians.

Police are expected to provide further details as investigations progress.
