One of Uganda’s most high-profile celebrity marriages has officially come to an end after music star Jose Chameleone and his estranged wife, Daniella Atim, agreed to separate following months of mediation, bringing closure to a relationship that has been under public scrutiny for years.
The settlement, reached through court-guided mediation, reportedly grants Daniella custody of the couple’s five children, while Chameleone will retain visitation rights and continue contributing to their welfare through agreed support arrangements.
The development marks a significant chapter in the lives of the former couple, who have spent nearly two decades together and built one of Uganda’s most recognizable celebrity families.
According to court documents and reports surrounding the proceedings, the parties agreed to separate on grounds of desertion after living apart for approximately five years. The decision follows a prolonged period of strained relations that saw Daniella relocate to the United States with the children while Chameleone remained largely based in Uganda to pursue his music career.
Daniella filed for divorce in 2025, arguing that the marriage had irretrievably broken down. In her petition, she accused the celebrated musician of desertion and emotional neglect, claiming she had shouldered much of the responsibility of raising the children during their years of separation.
Chameleone, born Joseph Mayanja, denied abandoning his family and maintained that the family’s move to the United States had been a mutual decision aimed at securing better opportunities for their children. He argued that the demands of his career often kept him away but insisted he remained committed to supporting his family.
The custody of the children emerged as one of the most contested issues during the divorce proceedings. However, mediation appears to have resolved the matter, with Daniella retaining primary custody while ensuring the children maintain a relationship with their father through visitation arrangements.
Beyond child custody, the divorce proceedings also attracted public attention because of disagreements surrounding family property. Reports indicate that discussions touched on assets accumulated during the marriage, including the family home in Seguku, Wakiso District. While some aspects of property distribution are understood to have been addressed through mediation, other matters may still require formal court approval before being fully settled.
Throughout the legal battle, Chameleone repeatedly expressed concern about the future of his children and the preservation of family assets. The singer argued that much of the property accumulated during the marriage was intended to secure the children’s future and should be protected accordingly.
For many Ugandans, the end of the marriage signals the conclusion of a relationship that had become part of the country’s entertainment narrative. Chameleone and Daniella married in 2008 and went on to raise five children together. Over the years, they weathered several publicized disagreements and periods of separation, but repeated reconciliation efforts ultimately failed to restore the relationship.
As news of the settlement spread, reactions from fans and industry observers reflected both sadness and acceptance. Many noted that the couple’s years-long separation had made the eventual outcome increasingly inevitable.
While the legal process may continue regarding some outstanding issues, the mediation agreement effectively closes a major chapter in the lives of both Chameleone and Daniella. For now, attention is expected to shift toward co-parenting arrangements and ensuring stability for their children as both parties move forward separately after nearly 17 years of marriage.
The conclusion of the case also serves as a reminder that even some of the most celebrated public relationships can face challenges behind the spotlight, with family, responsibility and the welfare of children ultimately taking center stage.
