Mpuuga Opens Door to Reconcile with Bobi Wine—But Only If ‘He Seeks Forgiveness’

Mukungwe-Nyendo MP, Hon Mathias Mpuuga has suggested that he is willing to reconcile with NUP president Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, also known as Bobi Wine, despite the ongoing tensions between them. It is important to note that since Bobi Wine expelled Mpuuga from NUP, their relationship has frequently been strained, something many predicted was inevitable.

Recently, the relationship between the two appeared to worsen after Bobi Wine made serious accusations against the MP. Bobi Wine alleged that Hon Muhammad Ssegirinya, before his passing, informed him that Mpuuga, who hails from the Masaka sub-region, was involved in the Bijambiya killings that occurred in 2022.

The government used this information as a basis to imprison Ssegirinya and fellow MP Hon Allan Ssewanyana. During a press briefing at Makerere Kavule last week, the NUP leader called Ssewanyana to reiterate these claims. Although Ssewanyana refrained from directly implicating Mpuuga, Bobi Wine urged him to state that the former NUP deputy was the mastermind behind the events.

This has created a considerable rift between the two factions, with Mpuuga even threatening to pursue criminal charges against the NUP leader. While addressing the audience on Mother’s Day at Namirembe Cathedral, Mpuuga expressed that he would be open to reconciling with the musician-turned-politician. However, this willingness is contingent upon whether the other party is equally open to reconciliation, as he believes that Bobi Wine is under some influence.

The former leader of opposition stated that it is hard to believe someone could stand before the public and fabricate such statements and then feel proud of making such a blatant falsehood. He emphasized that it is up to that individual to seek self-reflection and ask for forgiveness from those they have wronged, according to Mpuuga.

“Reconciliation is easily achievable if the other party is receptive and willing. Yet at times, you observe them and wonder if something is amiss. Ultimately, you can only pray and ask God to grant them forgiveness. However, reconciliation is possible if that individual learns humility, openly admits to their falsehoods, and seeks forgiveness from the offended party,” Mpuuga remarked.

Nonetheless, the prospect of reconciliation between the two remains bleak. With the 2026 general elections approaching, it is likely they will find themselves opposing each other, particularly since Mpuuga holds significant support in the Buganda region, which is crucial for NUP’s backing.
