Kampala, Uganda – Retired Major General Mugisha Muntu, former Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) commander and leader of the Alliance for National Transformation, has publicly urged President Yoweri Museveni to take action against military impunity—particularly by his son, Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba, the current Chief of Defence Forces.
In a sharp post on X (formerly Twitter), Muntu reminded Museveni, as Commander-in-Chief, that “the buck stops” with him. His statement referenced Museveni’s past criticism of undisciplined armies like the Uganda Army (UA) and Uganda National Liberation Army (UNLA), urging him to uphold accountability.
Muhoozi’s Provocative Actions Spark Outrage
The call comes amid growing controversy over Gen. Muhoozi’s reckless behavior, including his admission to kidnapping and torturing Eddie Mutwe, head of security for the opposition National Unity Platform (NUP). Muhoozi’s social media posts have fueled tribal tensions between the Baganda and Banyankore, raising fears of unrest.
His inflammatory tweets have also damaged Uganda’s foreign relations. In December 2024, he threatened to “capture Khartoum” with U.S. backing, prompting Sudan to demand an apology. Earlier, he vowed to attack “white mercenaries” in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), escalating regional tensions. Despite deleting the posts, Uganda’s government dismissed them as “casual,” though they mirror his 2022 threat to invade Nairobi—a gaffe that forced Museveni to apologize to Kenya.
Museveni’s Hypocrisy on Military Discipline
President Museveni has long condemned past armies for brutality and unprofessionalism, warning the UPDF in 2023 against similar behavior. Yet critics argue that under Muhoozi’s leadership, the military faces growing allegations of human rights abuses, including extrajudicial killings and trying civilians in military courts.
