Delays at Malaba Border as Digital Number Plate Registration Struggles

Drivers at the Malaba border are facing severe delays in the registration of digital number plates, a process that has caused major congestion over the past few days. The digital registration, introduced as part of efforts to streamline vehicle identification, has faced logistical issues, including an insufficient number of staff to handle the high volume of vehicles arriving at the border.

Currently, only five officials are assigned to the registration, and they are able to process only 30 vehicles per day. This has resulted in a significant backlog, leaving drivers stranded for extended periods. Some drivers have been waiting since Friday to complete the registration process, which is also contributing to increased costs as they are forced to stay in the area longer than anticipated.

The delayed registration process has not only affected drivers but has also led to financial losses for businesses relying on the timely processing of vehicles. The situation has sparked calls for more personnel to handle the registration, as well as for alternative registration locations, such as in Kampala, to relieve pressure on the Malaba border.

Authorities are reportedly aware of the issues and are working to find a solution, though the process remains slow as of now. The delay at Malaba is part of a broader challenge in implementing the digital number plate registration system across the country. With increased pressure from frustrated drivers and businesses, there is a growing sense of urgency to address the situation to prevent further disruptions.
