The General Court Martial in Makindye has resumed the trial of Dr. Kizza Besigye and Hajj Obeid Lutale, who face charges including treachery and illegal possession of firearms.
The previous session was marked by the arrest of defense lawyer Eron Kiiza, who was sentenced to nine months in prison for contempt of court by Judge Advocate Brigadier General Richard Tukacungurwa.
In the latest proceedings, the court exhibited a more relaxed approach, improving the organization of civilian access and streamlining security checks, which reduced congestion and allowed for a smoother start.
A significant development was the prosecution’s attempt to amend the charge sheet to include an additional, unnamed individual, reportedly an Air Force officer, though specifics remain unclear.
The court is expected to rule on several critical matters, including the trial of civilians in a military court, jurisdiction over the alleged crimes, and potential defects in the charge sheet.
Dr. Besigye highlighted that his lawyer, Eron Kiiza, is awaiting a ruling on objections raised, and the defense team has indicated plans to appeal Kiiza’s sentence.
Family members, including MPs Francis Mwijukye and Ken Lukyamuzi, have reported easier access to the court during this session.
The trial continues to attract significant public attention, raising concerns about judicial fairness and the role of military courts in civilian matters.
