In a heartbreaking incident on December 26, 2024, a police vehicle overturned on the Katosi-Nyenga road in Buwooya village, Buikwe District, resulting in two fatalities and multiple injuries.
The vehicle, a Toyota Land Cruiser Prado with registration number UP 7503, was en route from Nyenga to Mukono when the driver lost control, causing it to veer off the road and overturn multiple times.
The deceased have been identified as driver Sam Emusugutu and passenger Faustino Ejaapu, a cousin of Assistant Inspector of Police (AIP) Esther Amasikido.
AIP Amasikido sustained injuries, along with her maid, Mary Achieng (28), her sons, Ethorn Mwidu (6) and Elian Mwidu (2), and a juvenile cousin, Okello.
The injured were promptly transported to St. Charles Lwanga Hospital in Buikwe, where Emusugutu and Ejaapu were pronounced dead upon arrival.
Their bodies have been transferred to Kawolo Hospital mortuary for postmortem examinations.
This tragic event follows a recent accident on the same road, where a Goglon bus overturned, leaving several passengers injured.
These incidents have raised serious concerns about road safety on the Katosi-Nyenga route.
SP Hellen Butoto, the Police spokesperson for the Ssezibwa Region, confirmed the accident and urged motorists to exercise increased caution during the festive season, a period typically marked by heavier traffic.
Authorities are conducting thorough investigations into both accidents and emphasize the critical importance of adhering to speed limits and ensuring vehicles are in proper mechanical condition to prevent such tragedies.
