Businessman Aponye Dies in Car Accident in Ntungamo

Ntungamo, Uganda – Apollo Nyegamehe, a prominent businessman also known as Aponye, has tragically passed away in a car accident. The incident occurred at Itojo in Ntungamo District on Thursday evening, around 9 p.m.

Aponye was traveling in a Land Cruiser with an unidentified individual who sustained serious injuries in the crash. According to Samson Kasasira, the Rwizi regional spokesperson, preliminary investigations indicate that the Land Cruiser with registration number UBF 300Z, en route to Kabale, collided with a stationary motor truck (UAZ 767D FUSO) parked on the side of the road in Itojo due to mechanical problems.

The body of the deceased businessman was transported to Itojo Hospital mortuary, while the injured parties were rushed to Mbarara Regional Referral Hospital for medical treatment.

Reports suggest that Aponye was en route to attend the burial ceremony of a fellow businessman who had recently passed away.

Aponye was a well-known entrepreneur and owned several businesses, including Aponye Mall in downtown Kampala and Mega Standard Supermarket, as well as Aponye Mall in Ntinda. He gained attention for being one of the major suppliers of COVID-19 relief food, which sparked controversy regarding the selection process and the quality of the supplies distributed to the public.

In addition to his business ventures, Aponye served as the NRM chairman for Rukiga District and was a dedicated supporter of the ruling NRM party until his untimely demise.

The news of Aponye’s death has shocked the community, and tributes have been pouring in for the influential businessman and political figure. The circumstances surrounding the accident are under investigation, and authorities will work to determine the exact cause of the collision.
