You have no right to cancel anyone’s marriage- URSB saves MPs Magogo and Among’s marriage

The Uganda Registration Services Bureau has hit back at Makindye Division Urban Council Town clerk Rwakabale Geofrey by telling him that he has no authority whatsoever to cancel anyone’s marriage.

This is after a letter from Rwakabale to the authority stating how he had rescinded and withdrawn the marriage certificate given to the couple.

In his letter, Rwakabale said that he had noticed a lot of errors and omissions in paper works of the two after issuing them a marriage certificate which he had done under duress.

In URSB’s reply to Rwakabale, his role is to register and then transmit a return to the Registrar of Marriages at the URSB.

Therefore neither the town clerk nor the marriage Registrar at URSB has the mandate to invalidate a marriage.

For that matter, Rwakabale’s letter cannot cancel the marriage between FUFA president and Budiope east MP Eng Moses Magogo and the Bukedea woman MP Hon Anita Among who is also the Speaker of Parliament.

People have also been asked to ignore the misleading stories circulating about the validity of this marriage.

Upon completion of the registration at sub county level or in the Town Clerk’s office, a marriage return is filed with the Uganda Registration Services Bureau.

This then is entered into the National Register kept by the URSB the statement further stated

Plus customary marriage is one of the 5 types of marriages legalized in Uganda.

Customary marriage is a celebration of the rites in an African community. One of the parties in this marriage must be a member of that community.

The statement added that failure for registration does not invalidate a marriage.

Registration is only aimed at giving evidential value concerned with the marriage.
