UNAIDS Executive Director Winnie Byanyima has come out to criticize the arrest of her husband Dr Col Kiiza Besigye. Byanyima yesterday took to Luzira to visit her husband who has been in jail for a number of weeks.
She then asked him why he wasn’t at the Upper prison where he’s usually jailed from. She was informed by Besigye that the authorities told him that his crime is a minor one regarded as a public nuisance.
Byanyima went ahead to wonder why a man who is protesting against the high cost of living for Ugandans is sent behind bars before questioning whether Uganda can still boast of being democratic.
Byanyima went ahead to wonder why there is a senior army officer who is fond of airing tribalistic and partisan views about sensitive regional security issues but is walking scot free. This was in regards to the first son Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba. Yet when her husband stands up to fight for the marginalized, he’s simply sent behind bars.
Byanyima went ahead to advocate for the release of Beisgye and all political prisoners.
She didn’t stop here as this morning she stood surety for her husband as he applied for bail.
