Japan has come out to dismiss reports claiming that the Tokyo 2020 games which were suspended last year will be cancelled due to the coronavirus strain.
The Times reported on Friday that ‘Japan’s government had privately concluded that the already-delayed Tokyo Olympics would be cancelled this year’ because of the coronavirus pandemic.
The report claims that a senior member of the ruling coalition categorically stated that “No one wants to be the first to say so but the consensus is that it’s too difficult. I don’t think it’s going to happen.”
However, Japan’s Deputy Chief Cabinet Secretary Manabu Sakai on Friday told reporters on that “there is no truth to reports claiming the event would be cancelled”, denying a newspaper report that the event would be called off.
The report also claims that Japan is vying to instead host the Olympics in 2032 instead, with 2024 already awarded to Paris and 2028 to Los Angeles, but both the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and the board in Tokyo insist the Games will go on this year.
