Only Museveni has the power to reopen schools – ICT’s Nabakooba

Minister for Information and Communications Technology (ICT) and National Guidance, Judith Nabakooba has said it is only the President of Uganda, Yoweri Kaguta Museveni that has the mandate to reopen schools and all other institutions of learning.

During a press briefing, at the Ministry of ICT office in Kampala on Sunday, the former Uganda Police spokesperson said that only President Yoweri Museveni has the mandate to reopen schools and all the other institutions that were closed as a measure to combat the spread of the Coronavirus and urged the public to disregard and ignore the rumors circulating regarding the matter.

“The mandate to guide the nation on the reopening of schools and other institutions is with the President of Uganda,” Nabakooba said.

“When it comes to the national Covid-19 response, I want to call upon Ugandans to be calm and ignore some of the speculative messages regarding the reopening of public institutions,” she added.

There have been reports circulating that schools, candidates in particular are set to reopen for the second term that will end in mid-December, and that third term was to begin in January or February, whereas UNEB exams are to be in March.

The Ministry of Education was the first to dismiss the reports as being untrue and asked parents to disregard the same.

Nabakooba’s statement comes after the COVID-19 task force meeting with the President during which he was briefed on the progress of reopening the schools, places of worship, the airport, and other key sectors.

“The President will very soon come out to address the country about the progress being made but I ask everyone to remain calm as we wait.”

Nabakooba urged the public to remain vigilant and observe all Ministry of Health guidelines on Covid-19 amidst rising cases of the coronavirus crisis around the country.
