Minister Muyingo Orders Closure of Maranatha Schools Following Deadly Ggaba Daycare Attack

The Minister of State for Higher Education, John Chrysostom Muyingo, has ordered the immediate closure of Maranatha schools in Ggaba following a horrific attack at a daycare facility that left four children dead.

The directive comes in the wake of a tragic incident at a nursery and early childhood development centre in Ggaba, within Makindye Division, where a male suspect reportedly stabbed and killed four juveniles. The suspect has since been arrested, and police investigations are ongoing to establish the motive behind the attack.

Authorities described the incident as deeply disturbing, raising urgent concerns about the safety and security of children in early learning institutions. Minister Muyingo’s decision to shut down the affected schools is aimed at allowing a thorough investigation while also safeguarding other learners within the institution.

According to officials, the closure will also facilitate a comprehensive review of safety protocols, staff vetting procedures, and operational standards across similar institutions. Education authorities are expected to collaborate with security agencies to ensure that such an incident does not recur.

The tragedy has sparked widespread public outrage and grief, with parents, education stakeholders, and child rights advocates calling for stricter regulation and monitoring of daycare centres and nursery schools across the country.

Police spokesperson Racheal Kawala confirmed that the suspect is in custody and that a full report will be released once investigations are complete.

Meanwhile, counselling services are being mobilised to support affected families and the broader school community as they come to terms with the loss.

This incident has reignited national debate on child protection frameworks, with renewed calls for government intervention to strengthen oversight mechanisms in Uganda’s rapidly growing early childhood education sector.
