Uganda Under Pressure as Trump Administration Issues 60-Day Immigration Ultimatum

Uganda is reportedly among a list of 25 African nations facing fresh scrutiny from the United States over immigration and national security issues, with the administration of former U.S. President Donald Trump issuing a 60-day ultimatum for compliance or risk facing tough new travel restrictions.

According to senior U.S. immigration officials, Uganda has failed to cooperate on several key security matters, including the repatriation of its deported nationals and intelligence-sharing efforts in the fight against terrorism. The Trump-led administration insists that such cooperation is crucial in protecting the United States from potential national security and public safety threats.

“Uganda has not been responsive in accepting deported citizens and continues to fall short in screening and intelligence-sharing,” one official was quoted saying. The allegations also highlight a broader concern regarding high visa overstay rates among Ugandans in the United States.

Data from U.S. immigration authorities suggests that over 30,000 Ugandans are currently residing in America, with more than half believed to be staying illegally. Many are reported to have entered the country under the pretense of attending international conferences or academic events, only to disappear afterward and remain in hiding.

The ultimatum from the Trump administration has stirred concern within President Museveni’s government, which is now under diplomatic pressure to respond. Should Uganda fail to meet the outlined demands, it could face serious travel restrictions, including the suspension of visa issuance or outright bans on travel for certain categories of Ugandan citizens.

This development comes at a time when Uganda is also grappling with economic pressures and international image concerns. Analysts say the country must act swiftly to address the U.S. concerns or risk deeper diplomatic and economic consequences.
