Museveni Hails Agricultural Scientists as “Heroes” at African Union Summit

Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni has heaped praise on agricultural scientists, calling them the “unsung heroes of Africa” during his speech at the African Union Summit on Agriculture and Food Systems held in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

In a passionate address, Museveni lauded the scientists for their groundbreaking contributions to boosting agricultural productivity across the continent. He emphasized that innovation and science-led solutions are the keys to eradicating hunger and ensuring food security in Africa.

A Call for Innovation and Collaboration

The summit, attended by leaders, policymakers, and agricultural experts from across Africa, provided a platform to discuss challenges in achieving sustainable food systems. Museveni highlighted Uganda’s strides in agricultural research, particularly the development of improved seed varieties that are drought-resistant and high-yielding.

“Scientists are the backbone of our fight against food insecurity,” Museveni said. “Through innovation, we can transform agriculture into a lucrative enterprise and a sustainable solution to poverty.”

A Model for Africa?

Uganda has positioned itself as a leader in agricultural research, with institutions like the National Agricultural Research Organisation (NARO) spearheading the development of technologies that are transforming farming practices. Museveni urged other African nations to adopt similar strategies, pointing out that collaboration and investment in agricultural science could drive the continent toward self-reliance.

“Importing food is not a solution,” he remarked. “We must invest in our own capabilities and utilize the resources we have to feed our people and the world.”

African Leaders Rally for Food Security

The summit also saw calls for increased funding in agriculture and the strengthening of intra-African trade to reduce reliance on imports. Leaders acknowledged that climate change and global market volatility pose significant threats to Africa’s agricultural output, urging immediate action to mitigate these risks.

In a post-summit press briefing, Museveni reiterated the need for unity among African nations, stressing that “together, we can conquer hunger and become a powerhouse in global agriculture.”

From Science to Action

Experts attending the summit hailed Museveni’s comments as a timely reminder of the importance of agricultural research and innovation. Dr. Agnes Kalibata, the President of the Alliance for a Green Revolution in Africa (AGRA), said, “President Museveni’s vision underscores the critical role of science in solving Africa’s food security challenges. This is a wake-up call for the continent to invest in our agricultural future.”

As the summit concluded, Museveni’s words resonated with participants, who vowed to push for policies and investments that would strengthen Africa’s agricultural sector. For Museveni, the path forward is clear: science, innovation, and unity are Africa’s greatest tools in achieving food security.

The Ugandan president’s fiery rhetoric has placed him at the center of the agricultural revolution conversation, leaving many wondering if Uganda could set the benchmark for a food-secure Africa.
