Judith Nabakooba loses election petition as court confirms Joyce Bagala’s victory

Court has today 24th June 2022 declared Joyce Bagala as the duly elected woman member of Parliament for Mityana District. Three judges led by Geofrey Kiryabwire quashed the Mubende High Court decision which had refuted Bagala’s win.

Nabakooba had argued that the NUP candidate’s win was non complimentary with the election laws. The former Police spokesperson who was Bagala’s opponent for the position in the election ran to court challenging her victory.

She claimed that the former NBS news anchor had engaged in a series of voter malpractice actions such as voter bribery and intimidation of voters using soldiers.

The Court of Appeal argued that the lands minister did not produce sufficient evidence to back her claims. Further the judges said that even if it was there, it was not sufficient enough to affect the outcome of the results.

According to the Daily Monitor during hearing of the case “MP Bagala had maitaned that she will reclaim her seat because the election was conducted in compliance with the electoral laws.
She further disputed allegations by the minister of voter bribery, stating that even if there were any aspects of noncompliance with the electoral laws, they were not sufficient enough to warrant a nullification of her victory.”
