Court confirms Walyomu as Kagoma’s duly elected MP

The Jinja High Court in Jinja has dismissed with costs the election petition filed by Fredrick Munyirwa seeking to challenge the election of Moses Walyomu Muwanika as Member of Parliament for Kagoma county in the January 2021 General elections.

Munyirwa petitioned the court seeking to nullify Walyomu’s election citing a number of accounts including being illegally nominated and insufficient academic qualifications needed to contest for the position. Munyirwa’s account also accused Walyomu of bribing voters and changing his name among others.

Trial Judge Justice Joseph Murangira ruled that the evidence presented by the plaintiff did not convince the court while delivering his judgement. He dismissed the case with costs.

However, Munyirwa said he was not satisfied with the ruling and vowed to appeal through his lawyers Isaac Wanume and Ritah Athiang.

The Electoral Commission declared Moses Walyomu Muwanika the winner of the January 14 election with 7,948 votes versus Fredrick Munyirwa’s 5,048 and becomes the second time Walyomu is being sued over alleged election malpractices after 2016 when the Court of Appeal actually nullified his election citing electoral malpractices before winning the by-election.
