Universities not to re-open until Museveni okays resumption

The Ministry of Education through the National Council for Higher Education (NCHE) has urged all Higher institutions of learning including Universities and Secondary schools not to re-open for their 2021 programmes for continuing candidates until government through the President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni issues a directive.

All education institutions were stopped from carrying on with their activities and consequently closed with all students returning home in March last year as a measure to combat the spread of the Coronavirus in the country.

However, they were re-opened last year for the candidate classes while continuing students were prohibited from returning.

Prof. Mary Okwakol, the Executive Director of the NCHE on the 22nd January 2020 addressed a letter to all Vice Chancellors of higher education institutions urging them to halt their plans of re-opening for first-year and continuing students.

A part of the letter reads;

“As you are well aware, the directives to reopen high education institutions for finalists on health-related programmes, and subsequently for all finalists were given by the President of the Republic of Uganda. Accordingly, we await a decision of Government on the way forward regarding re-opening for non-finalist classes.”

Earlier last week, it was reported that Makerere University was to re-open was among the institutions expected to re-open after issuing out plans to students on with freshers expected to report on January 30th, 2021.

Following the NCHE notice, the university said in a separate letter that their programme was only tentative as they continue to await on the government decision.
