The Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) has unveiled plans to recruit 10,200 soldiers in a nationwide enlistment exercise that military authorities say will prioritize science-oriented applicants while introducing stricter safeguards against corruption and recruitment fraud.
The recruitment drive, expected to begin later this month, comes as the UPDF continues expanding its operational capacity and adapting to changing security demands within Uganda and across the East African region.
Officials say the latest exercise is designed not only to strengthen troop numbers but also to attract a new generation of technically skilled personnel capable of supporting modern military operations increasingly driven by technology, intelligence systems and specialized equipment.
Science Students Given Priority
According to official guidelines issued to district authorities and security committees, applicants with science and technical education backgrounds will receive special consideration during the recruitment process.
The UPDF says the army is seeking recruits with qualifications in subjects such as mathematics, physics, biology, chemistry, information technology and engineering-related disciplines as it modernizes its operational structure.
Military officials argue that contemporary defence operations now require soldiers capable of handling advanced communication systems, surveillance technologies, cyber-security infrastructure, aviation equipment and specialized engineering tasks.
Security analysts say the move reflects a broader transformation taking place within African militaries as governments increasingly invest in intelligence-led security operations and digital defence systems.
“The modern battlefield is no longer dependent only on physical combat. Technology, information systems and technical expertise are becoming central to military effectiveness,” a defence analyst in Kampala said.
In recent years, Uganda has increased investment in air surveillance systems, intelligence gathering, counter-terrorism capabilities and specialized military units, creating demand for more academically trained personnel within the armed forces.
Recruitment Schedule Released
Authorities say online applications will officially open from June 10 to June 24, 2026.
After the application phase, shortlisted candidates are expected to be published between July 1 and July 14 at district headquarters and through official UPDF communication channels.
The army says physical interviews, medical examinations and fitness assessments will begin on July 20 at designated recruitment centres across the country.
Resident District Commissioners (RDCs), district security committees, Chief Administrative Officers and local leaders have been instructed to supervise the exercise and ensure that recruitment guidelines are strictly followed.
Officials say district quotas have been allocated to guarantee balanced regional representation and fairness throughout the country.
The Kampala Metropolitan Area will reportedly operate under a special arrangement because of its high population and anticipated large number of applicants.
Areas including Kira, Nansana, Makindye-Ssabagabo, Busiro North and Busiro South are expected to function as independent recruitment units during the exercise.
Anti-Corruption Measures Intensified
The latest recruitment announcement places strong emphasis on eliminating corruption and restoring confidence in the enlistment process after years of complaints surrounding bribery and extortion.
Previous UPDF recruitment exercises have repeatedly been linked to allegations of middlemen soliciting money from applicants in exchange for promises of guaranteed recruitment opportunities.
In some cases, desperate families reportedly sold property or borrowed money in hopes of securing positions for their children in the army.
Security agencies have previously arrested individuals accused of impersonating military officers and extorting money from applicants through fake recruitment schemes.
Military authorities now say stricter verification procedures and enhanced supervision mechanisms have been introduced to prevent fraud and improve transparency.
Officials insist that recruitment into the UPDF is completely free of charge and have warned the public against dealing with brokers or unofficial intermediaries.
“No applicant should pay money at any stage of the recruitment process,” one official communication emphasized.
Authorities have also encouraged the public to report cases of bribery, forgery or favoritism to security agencies immediately.
Rising Interest Among Youth
The recruitment exercise is expected to attract significant interest from young Ugandans facing unemployment and economic challenges.
For many applicants, military service remains one of the few stable career opportunities offering a regular salary, accommodation, healthcare benefits and long-term government employment.
Interest in joining the UPDF has also grown following recent salary enhancements approved for lower-ranking soldiers.
Earlier this year, government announced improved pay for junior military personnel as part of wider efforts to strengthen morale and improve welfare within the armed forces.
Under the revised structure, salaries for Privates and Corporals are expected to increase substantially, with some lower-ranking personnel projected to earn more than Shs800,000 monthly.
Government officials say improved welfare is intended to strengthen discipline, professionalism and operational efficiency within the army.
Regional Security Environment
The recruitment exercise comes amid continued regional instability and expanding security operations involving Ugandan troops.
The UPDF remains actively deployed in counter-terrorism and peace-support missions in Somalia and eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, particularly in operations targeting the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF) and other armed groups.
Security experts believe the latest recruitment reflects Uganda’s long-term strategy to maintain operational readiness while responding to evolving regional threats.
Military authorities have urged applicants to follow official recruitment procedures and avoid individuals attempting to exploit the exercise for personal gain.
