ABC Capital Bank Posts Strong Profit Rebound as Turnaround Strategy Gains Traction

ABC Capital Bank Limited has reported a significant recovery in its financial performance, underlining the effectiveness of its ongoing turnaround strategy focused on digital transformation, product diversification, and strengthened governance.

The bank recorded a 285% surge in profit after tax to UGX 520 million in 2025, up from UGX 135 million in 2024, marking a sharp rebound from a loss of UGX 515 million posted in 2023. Profit before tax also rose to UGX 702.8 million, compared to UGX 404.5 million the previous year, reflecting improved operational efficiency and stronger earnings momentum.

Net operating income grew to UGX 7.59 billion, supported by increased interest income and stable non-interest revenue streams, signaling a more balanced and resilient income structure.

The bank’s balance sheet also strengthened, with total assets rising to UGX 60.8 billion from UGX 59.2 billion in 2024, while total equity increased to UGX 32.4 billion, reinforcing its capital position.

Executive Director Christopher Kabagambe attributed the improved performance to disciplined execution of the bank’s strategic priorities.

“This performance reflects the strength of our recovery path and the deliberate steps we have taken to reposition the bank for sustainable growth,” Kabagambe said. “We are seeing tangible results from stronger governance, focused execution, and a clear commitment to innovation.”

He noted that investments in digital platforms and product expansion are beginning to deliver measurable impact.

“Our digital transformation agenda and product diversification efforts are improving operational efficiency while expanding access to financial services. We are building a more resilient and future-ready institution,” he added.

The bank also highlighted improved cost management and prudent balance sheet optimization as key drivers behind the quality of earnings.

“Beyond profitability, the strength of our financial position and disciplined capital allocation stand out. We remain focused on long-term value creation through sound risk management and strategic investments,” Kabagambe said.

During the year, ABC Capital Bank implemented several strategic initiatives to support its growth trajectory. These included relocation to modern premises to enhance customer experience and corporate visibility, as well as the launch of a mobile lending platform aimed at improving access to credit and expanding market reach.

The bank also introduced the Agricultural Credit Facility (ACF) to support Uganda’s agriculture sector and deepen financial inclusion, aligning with national development priorities.

In addition, governance structures were strengthened through the appointment of independent non-executive directors, enhancing oversight and risk management capacity.

ABC Capital Bank maintained capital adequacy levels well above regulatory requirements, signaling a strong financial foundation.

Looking ahead, the bank says it will continue to prioritize digital innovation, product expansion, and financing key sectors of the economy as it consolidates its recovery and growth path.
