Popular TikToker Kiweewa Ronald, widely known as Wagon Selector, has been remanded to Luzira Prison following his defiant operation of an illegal radio station, 92.0 Crest FM, in Kyotera Town Council.
According to the Uganda Communications Commission (UCC), Kiweewa had been repeatedly warned to cease operations of the unauthorized station. Notices were issued, including public warnings in newspapers, but he allegedly continued to broadcast without a license, violating the UCC Act.
In response, an enforcement team was dispatched to Kyotera, where they shut down the station and confiscated key broadcasting equipment including transmitters, mixers, CPUs, microphones, headsets, and microphone stands. These have been secured as exhibits in the case against him.
Rather than complying with the legal directives, Kiweewa turned to social media, using his TikTok and X (formerly Twitter) platforms to accuse UCC officials of demanding bribes to restore his station. Authorities say his posts incited public unrest and spread misinformation about government agencies.
He was subsequently arrested and presented before court, where he was charged under the UCC Act and remanded to Luzira Prison pending further legal proceedings.
In court, a tearful Kiweewa reportedly admitted to his actions and pleaded for leniency, explaining that he had been trying to earn a living and did not intend to incite trouble. He expressed regret and asked for forgiveness.
The UCC has since reiterated its commitment to enforcing broadcasting regulations and called upon all individuals and entities operating media platforms to ensure they are properly licensed.
