Kasese Police Officer Killed by Falling Eucalyptus Tree During Storm

A police officer in Kasese District has tragically lost his life after a falling eucalyptus tree struck his shelter during a heavy storm.

The officer, identified as Rogers Kabili, was on duty in Mpondwe-Lhubiriha Town Council when strong winds toppled the decades-old tree. Kabili, who was inside a uniport shelter, died instantly at the scene.

Local leaders and residents are mourning the young officer, described as a brave and dedicated public servant.

Mr. Selevest Mapoze, the chairperson of Mpondwe-Lhubiriha Town Council, confirmed Kabili’s identity while visiting the site of the incident.

“This is a great loss to our community. Kabili was a disciplined, humble, and courageous officer who served with true dedication. We are deeply saddened, and we send our heartfelt condolences to his family and fellow officers,” said Mr. Mapoze.

The eucalyptus tree responsible for the tragedy had reportedly stood since 1935. According to local officials, its aging roots likely weakened over time, causing it to collapse during the storm’s strong winds.

By press time, the Uganda Police Force had not yet issued an official statement regarding Kabili’s death.

This incident highlights growing concerns over aging trees in public spaces, especially during the current stormy season across the country
