KAMPALA, Uganda — June 3, 2025 — A suspected bomb blast near the Munyonyo Martyrs Shrine shocked thousands of pilgrims attending this year’s Martyrs Day celebrations. The explosion happened during the early morning hours as people gathered for prayers at the holy site. Social media reports claim at least one person may have died, though officials have not confirmed this.
The Munyonyo Martyrs Shrine is a sacred place where the persecution of Uganda’s Christian martyrs began in 1886 under King Mwanga II. Every year, it draws thousands of faithful who come to honor the martyrs’ courage and sacrifice. Despite the scare, the ongoing Mass at the shrine continued, but worshippers have been urged to remain alert.
In a related event, the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) carried out an intelligence-led operation in Munyonyo earlier today. The UPDF killed two armed terrorists who were planning to disrupt the Martyrs Day celebrations. The security forces say this action helped prevent further danger to the public.
Security has now been tightened around Munyonyo and other major sites like Namugongo. Police and military officers are present in large numbers to protect pilgrims and ensure peace.
Colonel Chris Magezi, Acting Director of Defence Public Information, urged the public to stay calm but watchful. He encouraged people to report anything suspicious immediately to the security forces.
As investigations continue, Uganda is working hard to balance honoring the martyrs and keeping the public safe during this important national celebration.
