Mahamoud Ali Youssouf Elected as New African Union Commission Chairperson

Djibouti’s Foreign Minister, Mahamoud Ali Youssouf, has been elected as the new Chairperson of the African Union Commission (AUC) after a competitive vote held in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. Youssouf emerged victorious over Kenya’s Raila Odinga, winning with 33 votes in the final round.

Youssouf’s election follows a lengthy selection process that included the elimination of Madagascar’s candidate, Richard Randriamandrato, in earlier rounds. He will succeed Chad’s Moussa Faki Mahamat, who held the AUC Chair position for two consecutive terms.

As the incoming AUC Chair, Youssouf will oversee the implementation of the African Union’s agenda, which includes fostering continental integration, promoting peace and security, and advancing socio-economic development across the 55-member bloc. His leadership is expected to build on the legacy of his predecessor and tackle pressing issues facing the continent.

Youssouf has extensive diplomatic experience, having served as Djibouti’s Foreign Minister for several years. His tenure is noted for his work in strengthening regional ties, supporting conflict resolution efforts, and advocating for sustainable development policies across Africa.

The election of the new Chair comes at a critical time for the African Union, which is grappling with challenges such as economic recovery post-pandemic, political instability in several regions, and efforts to deepen continental trade through the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).

Youssouf’s victory has been hailed by several African leaders and diplomats, who expressed optimism about his ability to steer the commission in addressing the continent’s evolving challenges. The election process itself was lauded for being transparent and democratic.

The African Union Commission is the secretariat of the African Union (AU) and manages the day-to-day activities of the 55-country bloc. It is headquartered in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

The chairperson is elected for a four-year term, renewable once.
