Cranes Drawn in Tough Group for AFCON 2025 in Morocco

In the eagerly awaited draw for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) held yesterday in Rabat, Morocco, Uganda’s national football team, the Cranes, has been placed in Group D alongside Nigeria, Guinea, and Botswana. The tournament is scheduled to take place from December 21, 2025, to January 18, 2026, across six Moroccan cities.

This marks Uganda’s eighth appearance at the AFCON finals, with their most notable performance being a runner-up finish in 1978. The Cranes secured their spot in this year’s tournament after a commendable qualifying campaign, and they are now poised to make a significant impact on the continental stage.

Group D presents a challenging lineup for Uganda. Nigeria, a three-time AFCON champion, brings a wealth of experience and talent. Guinea has consistently been a strong contender in African football, and Botswana, making their second AFCON appearance, will be eager to prove themselves.

The tournament will commence on December 21, 2025, with host nation Morocco facing the Comoros Islands in Rabat. The final is slated for January 18, 2026, at the Complexe Sportif Prince Moulay Abdellah in Rabat.

As the Cranes prepare for the competition, fans across Uganda are hopeful for a strong performance that will echo the team’s historic 1978 run.
