Mpuuga Launches Democratic Alliance to Reshape Uganda’s Political Future

Mathias Mpuuga, the Leader of the Opposition in Uganda’s Parliament, has unveiled the Democratic Alliance, a coalition aimed at driving significant political and electoral reforms in the country. The launch, held in Kampala, marks a pivotal moment in Uganda’s opposition politics as the country gears up for the 2026 general elections.

During the launch, Mpuuga emphasized the need for inclusivity, transparency, and national unity to address Uganda’s political challenges. Among the Alliance’s key proposals are granting voting rights to Ugandans living abroad and prisoners, decentralizing the declaration of presidential election results to district levels, and strengthening electoral oversight. These reforms aim to foster accountability and mitigate concerns about vote rigging.

Mpuuga, previously a prominent figure in the National Unity Platform (NUP), clarified that the Democratic Alliance seeks to create a platform where like-minded parties can collaborate to advance democratic values and address governance issues. His message emphasized unity over personal ambition, stating, “It’s not about self-promotion but putting the nation first.”

This initiative has been lauded by political analysts as a bold step toward addressing systemic electoral challenges in Uganda. However, it is also expected to face resistance from entrenched political structures.

As Uganda approaches the 2026 elections, the Democratic Alliance’s proposals could significantly shape the political landscape if implemented. Mpuuga’s call for action and his willingness to work with diverse stakeholders highlight a growing momentum for reform in Uganda’s opposition politics
