Yesterday 26th August 2021 news broke out about how CMI had arrested a suicide bomber in Pader district.
It was reported that a bomb exploded at 21:40hrs in Dok Ilwak Restaurant in Pader town council where the body of the late Deputy IGP Maj Gen Paul Lokech is to be buried today.
The CMI further revealed that the arrested suicide bomber was planning to plant some explosives at Gen Lokech’s burial ground.
The suspect was also found with other explosives and a suicide jacket.
In a press statement released today 27th August 2021 by the Ministry of Defence and Veteran Affairs and the UPDF, the suspect was identified as Katumba Abdul aka Ben and was arrested at a guest house in Pader.
“Following an intelligence-led operation on the afternoon of Thursday 26 August 2021, a suspected suicide bomber identified as Katumba Abdul aka Ben was arrested by joint security forces at Mikicha Guest House.” Part of the statement read.
The statement said that the suspect was found with an assortment of home bomb-making materials.
These included assembled homemade bombs, bomb carrier bags, ball bearings, suicide vests, detonators, ammonium sulphate, wire cutters, switches and mobile phones used to detonate the bombs.
Investigations conducted so far indicate that the suspect had plans of disrupting the funeral proceedings of the late deputy IGP.
According to the statement, other accomplices are still on the run but have already been positively identified and therefore operations to apprehend them are underway.
The UPDF spokesperson Brig Flavia Byekwaso while talking about the situation said that the joint security forces are in control of the situation and therefore urged the public to remain calm.
