URA bows to pressure, agrees Bobi Wine’s terms on armoured land cruiser

The Uganda Revenue Authority (URA) has bowed to pressure and accepted demands to re-inspect former Presidential candidate Kyagulanyi Sentamu Robert’s new vehicle from his Magere home, in his presence. This was communicated by the tax body’s lawyers in a High Court session today in Kampala.

National Unity Platform’s Kyagulanyi Sentamu Robert petitioned the High Court challenging plans by the Uganda Revenue Authority to re-inspect his recently acquired vehicle which is believed to be armored.

Earlier this week, Kyagulanyi sought a temporary injunction against URA’s plans before the determination of the main suit.

Last week, Kyagulanyi had accepted to have the car re-inspected in his presence, at his home – a demand the tax body dismissed.

But appearing before the High Court’s Justice Emmanuel Baguma, Kyagulanyi’s lawyer Geoffrey Turyamusiima said they had received communication from the URA legal team led by Alex Ssali notifying that the tax body had finally accepted to conduct the re-inspection on Kyagulanyi’s terms.

“URA served us with their reply and they stated very well that they are willing to conduct the assessment in the presence of our client which wasn’t their case before. They also informed us through heir affidavit that they still have 30 days to respond to the letter which we wrote to them which was very okay with us,” Ssali said.

Justice Baguma ordered both parties to submit written submissions in the main suit for a ruling on 6th April 2021.

“The vehicle under contention a Land Cruiser 200 series V8 reg. number UBJ 667F was allegedly donated to Kyagulanyi by his supporters. The car, believed to be armoured has dominated local news for the past two weeks.

URA insists the car was under declared hence plans for re-inspection. Kyagulanyi contests the re-assessment demands by URA.

However, Alex Ssali insists they will make the payments should the assessment call for it.

“We are willing to make payments as long as their assessment is right and correct but if their assessment is not right and correct we shall challenge it.”
