UNOC Calls for Stronger QHSSE Standards as Sector advances to Oil Production

The Uganda National Oil Company (UNOC) today held a Supplier Development Workshop on Quality, Health, Safety, Security, and Environmental (QHSSE) requirements at Kabira Country Club in Kampala, bringing together suppliers and service providers to strengthen compliance and readiness across the oil and gas sector.

Officiating the workshop, UNOC Chief Operating Officer Samantha Muhwezi emphasized that as Uganda’s oil and gas industry transitions from exploration and development into production, expectations on all stakeholders continue to rise.

She noted that these expectations extend beyond technical and commercial capabilities, underscoring the importance of QHSSE as a critical foundation for responsible, efficient, and sustainable operations across the value chain.

“QHSSE is not just a compliance requirement. It is a shared responsibility that demands commitment, vigilance, accountability, and continuous improvement from all of us,” she said.

Muhwezi further stressed that adherence to QHSSE standards is fundamental to safeguarding lives, protecting communities and the environment, and ensuring quality outcomes. She warned that failure to meet these standards could have far-reaching implications for livelihoods, ecosystems, investor confidence, and national development.

The workshop formed part of UNOC’s broader supplier development efforts aimed at building the capacity of Ugandan enterprises to meet international standards and effectively participate in opportunities within the oil and gas industry. This aims to build a capable, compliant, and competitive local supplier base.

The engagement also featured the launch of a UNOC National Content Documentary, highlighting milestones in promoting local participation, enterprise growth, and skills development across the petroleum value chain.
