Singer Priscilla Zawedde, known as Azawi, has publicly shown her support for the newly introduced Electronic Penalty System (EPS), which has sparked controversy and been criticized as unreasonable by many. On her social media account, the artist stated that these new penalties are not necessarily a negative development.
She further emphasized that those who drive at night truly recognize the necessity of the EPS, as motorists often engage in reckless driving. The Swangz Avenue artist also expressed her hope that these penalties will be enforced on roads outside of Kampala, as this is where the majority of accidents occur.
“Those traffics fines are not really a bad thing , if you work at night you would understand, amazima gali nti tuvuga bubbi nyoo naddala ekiro…hopefully they apply this type of pressure to roads outside the capital because that’s where most fatal accidents happen.”
However, Azawi faced significant backlash from individuals who have been affected by these fines, as well as from those who feel it is unjust. Given that she has established herself as a voice for the people when facing injustices, many were puzzled by her stance in support of the regime.
To justify her position, the Quinamino singer revealed that she lost her partner due to speeding. She therefore hopes that online users can appreciate her reasons for supporting this initiative.
However some people argued that the fines are exorbitant although the measures are not bad. To this, Azawi said that “i got this ticket a few days ago and i must tell you, now i’m very cautious and disciplined … like the fine has to be painful for people to finally oblige and do better… otherwise showing leniency will make so many get away with it.”
