Lira, Uganda – The long-anticipated construction of the John Akii-Bua Olympic Stadium in Lira City has officially begun, marking a historic milestone in Uganda’s sports history. The stadium, named after Uganda’s first Olympic gold medalist, will honor his legacy while providing a modern platform for nurturing athletic talent and hosting national and international events.
The state-of-the-art facility, estimated to cost approximately $129 million (about UGX 490 billion), is expected to be completed within 20 months. The project, awarded to Egyptian construction firm Samco, aims to transform the Lango sub-region into a hub for sports excellence and economic activity.
Honoring a National Hero
John Akii-Bua etched his name in the annals of global athletics when he won gold in the 400-meter hurdles at the 1972 Munich Olympics, setting a world record of 47.82 seconds. This iconic achievement not only put Uganda on the international athletics map but also inspired generations of athletes. The new stadium seeks to immortalize his legacy, fostering a sense of pride and ownership within the region.

The groundbreaking ceremony was attended by key government officials and community leaders, reflecting the project’s national significance. Health Minister and Lira City Member of Parliament, Jane Ruth Aceng, was met with overwhelming support from local residents, signaling widespread enthusiasm for the development.
Speaking at the event, National Resistance Movement (NRM) Chief Whip Denis Hamson Obua emphasized the government’s commitment to delivering on its promises. “This project is a testament to our dedication to empowering regions and celebrating Uganda’s rich sports heritage,” he said.
