Government has commenced the tarmacking of key feeder roads in Masaka District in a move aimed at improving connectivity, easing transportation of agricultural produce, and stimulating economic activity across the region.
The project marks a significant infrastructure investment in one of Uganda’s most productive agricultural zones, where poor road conditions have long been cited as a major obstacle to trade, service delivery, and access to markets.
Officials say the upgraded roads will improve mobility for farmers, traders, students, and local communities while reducing transport costs and travel time across the district.
The development is part of broader government efforts to strengthen rural infrastructure and support local economic growth through improved road networks. Authorities believe that better roads will enhance access to markets, encourage investment, and facilitate the movement of goods and services within the Greater Masaka sub-region.
Local leaders welcomed the project, noting that many communities have struggled with dusty roads during the dry season and impassable sections during heavy rains. They expressed optimism that the tarmacking works will unlock new opportunities for commerce and improve the quality of life for residents.

Recent budget allocations have prioritized the construction, rehabilitation, and maintenance of roads across the country, including feeder and community access roads that connect rural producers to urban markets.
Stakeholders say the initiative could further strengthen Masaka’s position as a key agricultural and commercial hub in central Uganda, while supporting ongoing efforts to commercialize agriculture and improve household incomes.
As construction gets underway, residents have called for timely completion of the project and continued investment in rural infrastructure to ensure sustainable development across the district.
