2026 POLLS: Museveni Nominated, Unveils Key Priorities for Uganda’s Future

KAMPALA — President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni was on Tuesday officially nominated as the National Resistance Movement (NRM) presidential flag bearer for the 2026–2031 term, reaffirming his position at the helm of the ruling party and setting the stage for Uganda’s next phase of development.

Moments after his nomination, Museveni reflected on Uganda’s transformation since 1986, pledging to build on past progress while charting a new course for the future.

“Where we are moving to now is to again convince the people of Uganda of what has been achieved in the past, and what we are planning to do next,” he said.

The President outlined two major priorities for his next term.

**1. Accelerating Economic Growth**
Museveni said his government will partner with Uganda’s expanding middle class and international investors to propel the nation from lower–middle-income to high–middle-income status, and ultimately towards first-world standards.
*”If you check the figures, the GDP of Uganda has doubled—from about \$34 billion to \$66 billion. To double the size of GDP in one term is not a mean achievement,”* he noted, crediting investments in infrastructure, electricity, telecommunications, and education.

He emphasized that Uganda’s peace and stability continue to attract global investors, describing the country as *“peaceful, profitable, and resilient.”*

**2. Tackling Mass Issues for Ordinary Ugandans**
The second thrust of his agenda will focus on inclusive growth, ensuring ordinary citizens directly benefit from economic gains. Museveni pledged to:

* Involve every Ugandan in the money economy
* Provide free education for all children in government schools
* Repair and maintain roads on time
* Guarantee essential medicines in health facilities
* Deliver safe water to every village

*”Everybody must be involved in the money economy,”* he stressed, underlining that inclusive participation will be the backbone of his administration.

Museveni, accompanied by First Lady and Minister of Education and Sports Janet Kataaha Museveni, NRM Secretary General Richard Todwong, Prime Minister Robinah Nabbanja, and other senior leaders, is expected to elaborate further on his priorities during a major address at Kololo Grounds later today.

His nomination marks the beginning of a campaign that blends achievements of the past with a renewed promise of socio-economic transformation for Uganda’s future.
