Gen Kahinda Otafiire Sends Stern Warning to NRM Supporters Ahead of Heated Elections

The Minister of Internal Affairs, Gen Kahinda Otafiire, has issued a serious warning to all members of the National Resistance Movement (NRM), the party he is affiliated with. During a dialogue meeting between the Electoral Commission and Civil Society Organizations (CSOs), Otafiire urged these supporters not to impose their beliefs and ideologies on those from other political groups.

He explained how this persistent behavior has led to incidents of electoral violence. The purpose of the dialogue meeting was to ensure that all parties involved understand their limits in advance of the 2026 general elections. Otafiire also urged all electoral stakeholders to adhere closely to their legal regulations. He stressed that this compliance is crucial for a transparent and smooth election process.

Furthermore, the Minister advised the youth to refrain from destroying infrastructure while protesting for their so-called freedoms. The General pointed out that those encouraging them to engage in such actions typically have ample resources and are not burdened by debt. Otafiire also explained why tear gas has become a thing of the past in the country.

“As the Minister for Internal Affairs, I will not procure tear gas for Ugandans. That period has ended; I would rather invest in healthcare. Furthermore, I want to warn Ugandans who heed the advice of foreign agents to protest for their supposed freedoms while ultimately damaging infrastructure. Those nations have plenty, while here, you’re still incurring debts, which means the responsibility will eventually revert to you,” remarked the former bush war hero.

On multiple occasions, Otafiire has openly criticized his own government. This has earned him commendation from government critics but has also led to friction with some government supporters.
