The Member of Parliament for Busiro East, Hon Medard Lubega Ssegona, has mentioned his willingness to take over the leadership of the National Unity Platform from the current leader, Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, also known as Bobi Wine. While speaking at a public event in his constituency, the MP expressed his readiness to step into the leadership role once Kyagulanyi’s agreed-upon two terms as the party president come to an end.
“When Kyagulanyi’s two terms, which we mutually agreed upon as the leader of NUP, come to a close, the next president will be from Busiro, and that will be me,” Ssegona stated.
Bobi Wine took charge of the Kavule-based party in 2020 following negotiations with the original party, NURP, which was established by the troubled John Bosco Kibalama. This arrangement signifies that his leadership will last until 2030, and he will not be eligible to contest in the 2031 elections should he not be re-elected as the party president.
Ssegona’s comments have sparked a variety of reactions, with many perceiving them as a joke. Notably, the experienced legislator is closely linked to former NUP deputy president, now adversary, Hon Mathias Mpuuga. He was among the MPs who stood in defense of Mpuuga during the corruption scandals that resulted in his dismissal from the party. Others are of the opinion that Bobi Wine embodies NUP, and without him, the party may struggle to progress.
