Residents of Kamuli District were left stunned this week after a woman was arrested for allegedly attempting to murder her husband by mutilating his genitals during a domestic altercation.
The victim, identified as Richard Masanka, 60, a businessman from Busoigo Cell, Kasoigo Ward, was attacked late on the night of June 6, 2025. The suspect, only identified as Rehema, aged 40, is currently in police custody.
According to initial reports, the couple had been facing ongoing marital disputes, reportedly fuelled by accusations of infidelity and financial neglect. On the night of the attack, Masanka had gone to bed, leaving his wife outside. While he was asleep, Rehema allegedly entered the bedroom, tried to strangle him, and then used a sharp knife to cut off one of his testicles.
Hearing Masanka’s cries for help, neighbours rushed to his aid and quickly transported him to Kwagala Medical Centre–Buwengempya, before he was referred to Kamuli General Hospital. Due to the severity of his injuries, he was later transferred to a specialist facility in Mukono District for advanced treatment.
Speaking to the media on June 8, Busoga North police spokesperson Kasadha Michael confirmed Rehema’s arrest. She is being held at Kamuli Central Police Station and will be charged with attempted murder and assault under the Penal Code Act.
“We strongly condemn this act of domestic violence,” said Kasadha. “We encourage couples facing conflicts to seek peaceful solutions through counselling or legal channels, rather than resorting to violence that destroys families and lives.”
Unfortunately, such incidents are not new to Kamuli. In February 2025, a similar case occurred when Kevina Nabirye, a 34-year-old mother of four, used a knife to sever her husband’s genitals during a domestic dispute. The husband suffered permanent damage, and Nabirye was sentenced to 20 years in prison.
Another incident in 2024 saw Suzan Namuganza, from Nabwigulu, also mutilate her husband after a quarrel.
According to police, five similar cases have been recorded in Kamuli in recent years, raising growing concern about the rise of domestic violence in the district.
Investigations into the latest attack are ongoing, and Rehema is expected to appear in court early next week.
