Sam Nujoma, Namibia’s First President and Liberation Hero, Dies at 95

Sam Nujoma, Namibia’s inaugural president and a pivotal figure in the nation’s fight for independence, passed away on February 8, 2025, at the age of 95. He died in a hospital in Windhoek, where he had been receiving treatment for an illness over the past three weeks.

Born on May 12, 1929, in Ongandjera, Ovamboland, Nujoma emerged as a leading force against colonial and apartheid rule. In 1960, he co-founded the South West Africa People’s Organization (SWAPO), which spearheaded the liberation movement against South African administration. Under his leadership, SWAPO’s armed wing, the People’s Liberation Army of Namibia (PLAN), initiated guerrilla warfare in 1966, marking the beginning of a protracted struggle for independence.

Namibia achieved independence on March 21, 1990, with Nujoma serving as its first president. He was re-elected twice, leading the nation until 2005. During his tenure, Nujoma focused on establishing democratic institutions and promoting national reconciliation, aiming to unify the country’s diverse populations.

While celebrated for his role in nation-building, Nujoma’s legacy is multifaceted. He was known for his anti-Western rhetoric and made controversial statements on issues such as AIDS and homosexuality. Additionally, his leadership style faced criticism for autocratic tendencies, including amending the constitution to allow a third presidential term and suppressing dissent during the 1999 Caprivi rebellion.

Nujoma’s death marks the end of an era for Namibia. Current President Nangolo Mbumba announced a period of national mourning, reflecting on Nujoma’s significant contributions to the nation’s history. As Namibia remembers its founding president, citizens and leaders alike are reflecting on his enduring impact on the country’s journey to sovereignty and unity.
