Museveni Engages US, UK Envoys Over Regional Security and Governance

President Yoweri Museveni held pivotal talks with US Ambassador William W. Popp and UK High Commissioner Lisa Chesney at State House Entebbe, addressing critical issues affecting Uganda and the broader region. High on the agenda was the M23 rebel group’s insurgency in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, where Uganda has significant military and economic stakes.

The discussions also tackled domestic concerns, including international scrutiny over the trial of opposition leader Dr. Kizza Besigye, whose military court proceedings have drawn criticism from Western governments. This meeting comes amidst strained Uganda-West relations following the suspension of US aid, likely over governance and human rights concerns.

Museveni reaffirmed Uganda’s commitment to regional stability, emphasizing the country’s key role in addressing the crisis in eastern Congo. Western envoys, however, expressed the need for robust judicial reforms and adherence to democratic values as essential for continued international support.

These diplomatic engagements reflect Museveni’s efforts to strengthen ties with influential global partners while addressing sensitive issues at home and in the region.
