Ruhakana Rugunda not running for presidency

Former Uganda Premier Dr. Ruhakana Rugunda has distanced himself from suggestions and calls to run for presidency in the 2026 polls.

Rugunda via his Twitter handle noted that a number of reports and parties have been suggesting he runs for the President’s seat come 2026, a move that would see him join John Patrick Amama Mbabazi as the other former Prime Minister to run for the country’s topmost political office.

Rugunda who is currently serving as a Special Envoy for Special Duties in the Office of the President tweeted saying he has read posts suggesting he should run for Presidency come 2026.

“I have read social media postings and suggestions that I should run for President in 2026. I would like to make it known that I have no such intentions or plans”- Special envoy for special duties, office of the president.”

Dr. Ruhakana Rugunda was Uganda’s Prime Minister from 2014 to 2021 before being dropped from Cabinet after the 2021 General elections that saw him replaced with hon. Robinnah Nabbanja.
